WEEZER

For the 30th anniversary of The Blue Album, Weezer set out to create what Rivers Cuomo described as an “epic tour” accompanied by a mix of visual and narrative elements. This ambitious approach ensured that The Journey From The Blue Planet Tour required a highly technical rigging approach to support its ambitious storytelling and effects.

The production featured an automated rocket launch sequence, pyro moments, automated lighting, and moving scenic elements—all designed to immerse audiences in a sci-fi–inspired world. To achieve this look, the show utilized four independent “mini” grids that worked together to create fluid motion, controlled transitions, and a clean, futuristic aesthetic.

As head rigger, it was Joanna’s responsibility to ensure that every piece of this complex system—mechanical, structural, and scenic—was safely and precisely executed day after day.Through meticulous planning, communication, and on-the-ground problem solving, she and the production / design team were able to deliver a visually cohesive and technically complex production that honored the legacy of The Blue Album while giving fans a fully immersive, modern spectacle.

The multi-grid approach functioned seamlessly throughout the tour, supporting automated moments that became centerpieces of the show’s identity. By maintaining both efficiency and the highest safety standards, she helped ensure Weezer’s anniversary production met its ambitious goals.
